Kernsetzer and Atticus compared
Atticus is the one established book-formatting tool that already works on Windows, Mac and Linux. Kernsetzer aims at the same authors with a different approach. Here are the facts, and an honest note on who should choose what.
Kernsetzer is still in development; a closed beta is being prepared and there is nothing to download yet. What is said about it here is what it is being built to do, not what you can use today.

Where Atticus is better
It is available now, on every desktop system, at a clear one-time price, and it has a refund guarantee. Kernsetzer has none of that yet. If you need to format a book this week on Windows or Linux, Atticus is the realistic choice.
Where Kernsetzer is aimed
Kernsetzer is a native desktop program, not a web app: the manuscript lives in a file on your computer and nothing is uploaded. We are putting our effort into the look of the printed page, such as hyphenation, widows and orphans, chapter openers, and proper typography for German as well as English. Whether that makes a visible difference is for you to judge from the sample pages we will publish.
